How I Found My Calling and You Can Too

Hindsight is 20/20 isn't it? Like most 20 somethings, after college, despite my new degree, I was completely. lost. I had no idea what I wanted to do or be. My degree was a generic communications degree, nothing specific. Not to mention everyone wants you to have a degree in rocket science with 25 years of experience just for a base level job these days, which didn't make things any easier. The only thing I always knew I wanted to be was a mom, but turns out, the pay for that isn't great (but it is priceless :-)). So I still had to find a job. I dabbled in lots of different businesses, always knowing I really wanted to find my own thing and not work for someone else. I had a retail store, cosmetics line, party entertainment business, and worked various different jobs along the way too. But nothing really stuck.

I always had all these fun business ideas but my main problem was that I never had an audience for them. If only people saw the things I could create, they would appreciate them and support them, but finding an audience was the hardest part. And what's a business without buyers right? I had a personal (but not private) Instagram account like most people do and one day for some random reason I got a couple of random strangers following me. It dawned on me almost instantly that somehow I needed to grow my Instagram account and THAT would be my audience. Learning to grow my Instagram is another long story for another time that I'll share if you'd like, {comment below if you want me to}. That became my goal so that whenever I did come up with something to share with the world, I would have an audience, and maybe even purchasers for products, people that were interested and invested in my journey and what I would create. It was the solution I needed for the problem I had. No matter what I decided to do, I needed people to know about it if I was going to make it work on my own.

I struggled then with what my path would be within this new space because I didn't have everything else figured out yet. First it was mommy blogging but that felt inauthentic because 1. I wanted to have my own thing, separate from my daughter, as much as I love her, and 2 because I really had no idea what the he11 I was doing myself and was in no place to tell anyone else how to be a better mom. Then I thought fashion because it seemed to be working well for everyone else in the world (am I right?) but that's expensive to start doing and as a new mom, well.... ain't nobody got time for that either. Then came parties. Ahhh at last, my happy place. I was hesitantly showing photos of my parties here and there on instagram before realizing that that was where I belonged all along. I used to plan and write down schedules for my sleepovers (what a fun friend, right?) and I would dress to the nines in all the themed things for every holiday since I could remember. I loved decorating and creating and my type A self just loved the compartmentalization and organization of a dedicated theme for any reason. I even loved writing and creating websites just for fun. ( I do realize how nerdy all of this sounds but I'm hoping it inspires at least one person to follow their dreams even if you aren't sure where they're leading you).

I eventually figured out how to do parties from home while raising my baby and making money by becoming a party stylist and blogging/instagramming. I turned all of my favorite things into a job. That's the dream as far as I'm concerned. I truly believe you can turn anything you love into a money maker somehow. Maybe not the most obvious way, but there's always a way to make it a perfect match and this was mine. It seems so obvious now, especially as I write this, but for some reason, it just wasn't. I thought I had given up parties, I thought I would never be great at them. I didn't see how I could make it my job, especially from home, but I did. Don't get me wrong, it's not always rainbows and sunshine and working for yourself isn't the easiest thing in the world, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Being home with my baby while she grows up, really is priceless to me. So for all you 20 or even 30 somethings that can't find your way, we've all been there at some point, and your destiny might be right in front of you and you just don't even realize it. What are you good at? What are you known for? What do you love? What sets your soul on fire? What makes YOU you? Be patient, it takes time!
So that is how I found my calling...

I know this is a lot about me but I'm hoping it inspires you to think outside of the box and find your calling!

  2. Very inspiring post! I too have struggled with many of the things you spoke about in your blog. Being in my late 20s with a degree I also have felt lost in what I actually wanted to do. I have tried a few different ventures but nothing has given me that spark. I stopped to evaluate what is it I would truly enjoy doing. I very much love fashion which is actually what one of my degrees is in.However trying to break into that field is no easy fete. As I approached the New Year I knew I had to make a choice where I wanted to be career wise. After all, years are passing by and I am still trying to figure out where I want to be. When I was busy planning my own wedding I was so focused on all the details and really enjoyed the whole planning process. I have always loved planning parties and thinking about event planning has brought me that excitement. Being that I recently created an Instagram page for party inspo, I would love to get your advice on how to grow a following. Thank you for opening up about your struggles along the way. It is great motivation seeing you turn your dream into a reality. Keep up the great work! Your page is amazing BTW.

  3. I can relate 100% to this! Obtained a general business management degree but yearn for being able to have my own business. I love to bake and throw themed parties but settling on what I want to pick as my focuse has always been a challenge for me. I'm glad to see you were able to turn your passion into your business. Gives me hope!
