1. Stay off Social Media- I'm guessing this is the #1 issue for most people these days. As someone who's job it is to post online, I get it. There's a few things you can do to help combat the lure of social media if you have no self control, like myself. Start by deleting the app, yes, I said it. It doesn't delete your profile, it's still accessible elsewhere and can be very easily downloaded again if you really can't go on without it. I promise your productivity will skyrocket. If you are addicted to laptop or desktop viewing, do a quick google search for "Facebook Blockers" and you'll find a ton of apps you can download on your computer to temporarily block Facebook or any other website during the times you specify. Lastly, I've just recently gone through my friend list and deleted everyone that I'm not actually real life friends with and unfollowed pages that no longer interest me so my feed is less busy, there's less to see, and I'm less likely to get sucked into the social media black hole.
2. Unsubscribe- Speaking of getting sucked into black holes, another good idea is to unsubscribe from any email lists that you are no longer interested in; stores, blogs you no longer read, businesses you no longer visit. They clog up your inbox and can be a distraction. I recommend unsubbing as soon as they come in so you don't forget. Then anytime your inbox lights up, it's for good reason.
3. Put your Phone on Silent- Just because you're working from home doesn't mean you're not working. Just as you would at any other job, put your phone on silent and avoid texting anyone back until you're done with your tasks for the day. That goes for the TV too ;-)
4. Plan, Prioritize, and Batch- Make a list in order of priority of what you need to get done and then schedule time in your calendar to complete each task. If my to-do list gets too long I get completely overwhelmed. But if you plan and schedule when you're actually going to do it, it becomes more manageable. Try to batch and do one thing at a time. If you need to take photos of 3 different things for example, photograph them all on the same day, and then edit them altogether the next day. Batching photo editing has changed my life. It saves a ton of time and can easily be done if you plan ahead.
5. Stop Researching- This is me too. { Am I actually writing this for myself? Maybe. } I could read blog post after blog post about blogging. But truth be told, I've pretty much read all the tips at this point. It's hard to stop because I'm passionate about the subject and excited to grow and improve my blog. But reading about how to grow my blog, won't actually grow it. The information is great but what you do with it is all that matters. Try to remember that and avoid paralysis of analysis. Just do it, just start..somewhere!
6. Delegate- Try not to micromanage { hi, me again! }. If you're in a position to get an intern, definitely get one. Contact your local college or place a Facebook jobs ad, that's how I found mine. You can also hire a virtual assistant to help with any mundane tasks. If you're a work at home mom like me, hire a babysitter once in a while so you can snag a few extra hours to get things done. Lastly, try automating whatever you can. I use an app called IFTTT which automatically sends my instagram photos to pinterest and my blog posts to Facebook and a bunch of other simple tasks which saves me a ton of time.
Just remember, even if it's your side hustle, if you want it to become your job, you have to treat it like a job. Sometimes busy is just a state of mind. Do you have any other tips you think I should add? Tell me in the comments below:
