Decluttering and Designing Your Dream Closet

Thank you California Closets for sponsoring this dream closet post.

One of the most important things I look for when buying a new home is good closet space. Small closets = no deal! When we bought this house, 2 years ago, we knew we wanted to create an amazing dream closet space in our master bedroom. It has the perfect space for a huge closet but it's not being utilized properly. Lots of the space isn't even being used at all. So, I'm not sure if it's the nesting instinct or the fact that we've finally just recovered from our giant kitchen renovation, but I've decided that now is the time to start looking into this dream closet project.

ORGANIZING YOUR DREAM CLOSET

Now, if you watch my Instastories then you probably know my obsession with organizing since reading A Simplified Life. I have also been reading up on the KonMari method of simplifying and organizing and I wholeheartedly believe in it and it's impact on every area of your life. Her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is next up on my reading list. But to sum it up, she preaches that you should only keep items that "spark joy", getting rid of unneeded things. I have always lived this way but have recently kicked it up a notch since becoming a mom. So a good dream closet with an intentional space for everything is exactly what I wanted to create.

The first company that came to mind for me, was California Closets, they have a location literally down the street from me, in Boca Raton, so I thought I would check out their showroom and see what the design process entailed. I was matched with Sybil, one of their closet designers and she explained the process to me. She was extremely sweet and knowledgable and the importance of a great designer quickly became apparent to me. And great designers seems to be where California Closets excels. All of their designers are extensively trained and can really design a closet to exactly fit your needs and they use top of the line custom software to really help you visualize exactly what you are getting with just a few clicks.

Usually the designers will come to your home to see the space and design your dream closet right there on the spot with their iPads. I wanted to see everything in person so I opted to visit the showroom instead. They had so many options! I brought some photos and measurements with me and in under an hour she had fully designed and quoted my dream closet within my budget that perfectly matched my style. She asked a lot of very specific questions and helped guide me in the right direction with her ideas and experience which was invaluable. She asked me things like "Do you have mostly long dresses or short?" "Approximately how many shoes do you have?" She brought up things I never would have thought of to really design a closet to exactly fit my needs. A good designer is key ladies! I even got to see a 3D rendering of my dream closet so it was so easy to visualize. Her design makes so much more sense than my current closet situation or anything I would have come up with on my own. It really solves my storage issue and would be so much more convenient.

I picked up some great organization tips along the way too. Some of my favorite tips include: keeping the items you use most everyday, closest to you for easy access. So for example, don't put your favorite, everyday handbag, on the top shelf, store it closer to the middle so you can easily grab it. Another great tip was organizing your shoes by category. So keep all of your dress shoes together on the same shelf, all of your sneakers together, etc. She also showed me how convenient a valet rod can be in a closet for planning out outfits. But most importantly, stick to the Marie Kondo method and only keep things you need, use, and that "spark joy".

The design consultation is free and I would definitely encourage anyone looking to organize or simplify their life, to schedule their own closet consultation to build a space just for you. It doesn't just have to be a bedroom closet, they also do pantries, media centers, mudrooms, garages, murphy beds, and more to help you maximize your home efficiency. I really believe that starting off your day with a neat and organized space can really spill into other areas of your life and make every day a little better.

After my consultation I was so inspired that I literally came right home and organized my closet. I pulled out everything and only put back the things that I really wanted to keep. I purged a ton of stuff that I didn't actually need or that didn't, "spark joy".
